Leonardo Kapural, MD, PhD, serves as a Director at Large on the Executive Board of the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN), representing the society’s 2025–2027 leadership term. He is a pain physician at Carolinas Pain Institute and The Center for Clinical Research (also known as Queen City Clinical Research), and has held academic appointments as Professor of Anesthesiology at Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and as clinical adjunct faculty in anesthesiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Dr. Kapural earned his medical degree from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine in Croatia, and completed residency in anesthesiology and critical care and fellowship training in pain management at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He remained at the Cleveland Clinic for a decade, serving as Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Pain Management and as Professor of Anesthesiology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Outcomes Research. He is board certified in anesthesiology and in pain medicine.
His clinical and research interests center on interventional pain management, including spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, discogenic low back pain, and chronic visceral abdominal pain. Dr. Kapural has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, numerous conference abstracts, and multiple books and book chapters, and has been recognized with two Innovator Awards for contributions to pain-treatment technology. He has been named to “Best Doctors in America” by peer nomination.
Beyond ASPN, Dr. Kapural has served as Director at Large of the American Academy of Pain Medicine and currently serves as Director at Large of both the North American Neuromodulation Society and the International Neuromodulation Society. He is also a member of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and the World Institute of Pain.
