Bio
Tariq AlFarra, DO, is a Johns Hopkins–trained interventional spine and pain management specialist who serves as Vice Chair of the Advocacy & Policy Committee for the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN). He is an interventional spine/pain specialist at the Mount Sinai Health System and Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, seeing patients at Mount Sinai Downtown Union Square and Mount Sinai Faculty Practice Associates in New York City. He also serves as co-director of media and public relations for the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM).
Dr. AlFarra earned his medical degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (University of North Texas Health Science Center) and completed a preliminary-year internship at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center–Temple/Texas A&M College of Medicine. He went on to Johns Hopkins Hospital for residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation, where he was elected chief resident, followed by an interventional pain medicine fellowship, also at Johns Hopkins. He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
His clinical practice covers a full range of interventional solutions for cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine-related pain, along with CRPS, peripheral neuropathy, phantom limb pain, and peripheral joint arthritis, using techniques spanning spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, basivertebral nerve ablation, endoscopic rhizotomy, and minimally invasive lumbar decompression. He has co-authored peer-reviewed work on topics including ganglion impar blocks for coccydynia, spinal cord stimulator design and placement, and neuromodulation, and has presented research at national and international pain medicine conferences. Within ASPN, he has contributed to the society’s advocacy work, including comment letters to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on physician reimbursement policy.
